Sometimes, we call Him “Lord” with our lips, but our lives tell a different story.
Luke 6:46 (ESV)
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
This verse didn’t apply to me when I first met Jesus. I knew about Him, but I don’t think anyone would have accused me of following Him.
I did my own thing and often chose the easy way out. I’m learning now that this is why life was so challenging. When I choose to do what may not feel good in the moment, life actually gets easier. He doesn’t promise easy, but it does get easier. That’s the best way I can describe it right now.
Even after meeting Him, it’s easy to get caught up in doing, which is good since we’re called to be doers of the Word, not hearers only.
But when the doing becomes the focus, the activity itself can quietly become an idol.
Anything that takes us away from relationship with Him takes something from us and will eventually deplete us.
But when we stay connected to the Source, He fills us, helping us accomplish all He has for us.
He is the Source, the living water Jesus spoke of.
For me, learning to connect and stay connected began with learning how He speaks, not what He sounds like, because He can speak through anyone. I started by reading the Gospels, reading the red letters, and hearing the love in His voice. He didn’t condemn anyone except those who replaced relationship with religion.
I’m learning to pause before reacting, to ask Jesus what He thinks about a situation, and to wait for His answer as I continue on with my day. I release my expectations of how He’ll answer or who He’ll use.
I don’t have this all figured out, but He’s showing me, and teaching me. And every time I ask Him to increase my ability to feel His love, He does.
John 14:18-20 ESV
[18] “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. [19] Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. [20] In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
John 16:12-15 ESV
[12] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. [13] When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. [14] He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. [15] All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
These are promises for all who choose to believe. I believe.
If you’ve been running on empty, take a moment today to reconnect with Him.
He hasn’t moved.
From one traveler to another, peace and God bless!
